Vodafone Egypt at a Glance

Vodafone Egypt Telecommunications SAE (Vodafone Egypt) first entered the Egyptian telecom market in 1998, operating under its former name, Click GSM. As a joint stock company incorporated under Egyptian national laws, it was rebranded to Vodafone Egypt in 2002 and has since become the leading mobile operator in the country. Vodafone Egypt currently holds a mobile market share of 45.5% and 33% in revenue and active base customers, respectively. This growth is supported by a diverse range of telecommunication services, including mobile and fixed voice, SMS, data, and mobile money, serving over 48 million consumer and enterprise customers.

In December 2022, Vodacom Group Limited, a leading, purpose-led African connectivity, digital, and financial services company acquired a controlling 55% stake in Vodafone Egypt, with the remaining 45% stake held by Telecom Egypt. Vodacom Group, including Safaricom, serves 186 million customers across the consumer and enterprise segments. Headquartered in South Africa, the Group has successfully expanded its business across Africa, operating prominently in Tanzania, the DRC, Mozambique, Lesotho, Kenya, Ethiopia, and Egypt. Vodacom Group is majority-owned by Vodafone Group, one of the world’s largest telecommunications companies by revenue, which holds a 65.1% stake.

This Year’s Report Theme

Holding the largest market share compels us to take daily action to improve lives through our products, services, and operations. Inspired by this commitment, this year’s sustainability report theme “Enriching Lives Everyday Through Our Technology”, explores the tangible impact our innovations have on Egyptians’ daily lives, demonstrating how we are building a more sustainable community for a better future.

Our journey to enrich Egyptian lives has lasted for a quarter of a century and included all aspects of our daily operations, from constantly striving to become a strong connectivity provider, supporting in bridging digital divides and fostering inclusivity, to empowering people by constantly considering the diversity of interests according to age, income, needs and cultures.

Reporting Period and Scope

Since 2018, Vodafone Egypt has voluntarily committed to sustainability reporting, sharing our most recent initiatives, achievements, and impacts on the community.This report covers the fiscal year 2024 (FY2024), which begins on 1 April 2023 and ends on 31 March 2024. The scope and boundary of this report include all our activities and entities in Egypt, unless otherwise stated. Financial statements contain the following subsidiaries: Vodafone for Data, Vodafone for Trading, Sarcom (Sarmady), and Vodafone Foundation – NGO. We have not restated any information from previous reports, unless otherwise indicated.

Reporting Frameworks

Recognizing the importance of transparency and accountability in our ESG journey, we have opted to release an annual sustainability report to communicate our progress. This FY 2024 report marks our third consecutive year of voluntary reporting. This report has been prepared in accordance with the latest universal GRI Standards, the most widely used global standards for sustainability reporting, providing a common language for organisations to convey their impacts on the economy, environment, and society. We have applied the GRI Reporting Principles for defining report content and quality, such as stakeholder inclusiveness, materiality, sustainability context, completeness, balance, comparability, accuracy, timeliness, clarity, and reliability.

This report covers the economic, environmental, social, and governance aspects of our operations, products, and services, as well as our contribution to and alignment with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), Egypt’s Vision 2030, Financial Inclusion Strategy (2022-2025), Digital Egypt Strategy, and Egypt’s National Climate Change Strategy (2050). These frameworks help contextualize our contribution based on diverse internal and external initiatives.
